Magic is the manipulating of the mana that flows through all living beings. All living things can cast magic to some degree but you can only store so much mana at one time. You probably already know how to cast some of the more basic spells but the way you cast low level spells will not get you far in here the mana required for some of these is already high enough so first you will need to know exactly how much mana you need, then one must be able to pour the right amounts of the contents out to make the shape needed to cast the spell, finally one must shape the mana into the spell manifesting it at the users fingertips. Understanding the different pieces that allow you to obtain pour out and shape the mana is the most important first step to any aspiring mage hopefully with this writing even a cutie like you can become the next great council member. The first piece of casting a spell which is called the Mana Container is something we are all born with this determines how much mana and what kind of mana flows into your container as it recharges. Do not fret if your mana container seems to not be able to store much at this current moment, This is because it can expand over time as long as you are willing to work with it long enough... Or I will be seeing you in a very cute outfit next semester~. the second part to casting a spell is the semipermiable lid on top of the container, this is called a Gate. This will determine how pure the mana flows out for the spell you are trying to cast. This will determine how much mana you will need to put into a spell before it can be shaped properly. Generally the star sign that was directly above you when you were born will determine what type of gate you have. The last part of casting a spell and the part you have the most control over is the shaping of the mana. In most cases you can just envision the shape that you wish the mana to take and it will take that shape. However in some cases there can be too many details to remember at once so you must break the shape into the base, main details, and finer details to more accurately shape your mana into the spell you wish to cast.
Mana is an energy that flows through most life like a liquid into a jar, most lifeforms release the energy as quickly as it flows in however there are those lifeforms who choose to shape the energy into what is known as magic these mages come in three forms, Wizards who store a lot of mana and cast long spells to release the energy in large groups, Mages who cast magic in a balanced way as to not overuse the resource and become immobile(or worse) and Witches who release it in small bursts choosing speed of casting over the power that they could put in. Although most of the time witches are female there can be male witches if they can get over the embarrassing attire they would have to wear to cast more effectively. Casters must learn to control the release of their mana over time and build up reserves over time. Those who have built up a large reserve may release the excess mana from their body too quickly which can cause damage to everything around them; In these cases casters will have to wear enchanted equipment to flow their mana into this either allows them to store charges of spells they infused the memory into or allows a constant magical effect to flow over their forms.
Now that you understand the basics of casting a spell let's move on to what the different spell types are and what they are useful for. Let's start with my Gate's spell type and talk about summoning. Summoning magic is casting a being from any world or plane to your world. This is the same type of magic we will be using in the Festival of the Familiars in Nileth so get prepared while you can. Your familiar is very important but that is for a later section. The next spell type we will discuss is the opposite of summoning, Banishment or more modernly Projection this type of magic is the projection of yourself or another being onto another plane or world however unlike summoning you can not actually get to the plane itself you can only take over the senses or possess a creature from this plane. Next we will go over Infinity the magic of casting things into existence. While you are technically not making something out of nothing you are making a perfectly solid form of mana that perfectly replicates what you cast. If you were to cast a carrot into existence it would have all the properties you know from a carrot including nutrition flavour and texture. The opposite of infinity is Void, casting things out of existence. This is the least stable spell type because void spells transfer matter into mana while at first this can be a good thing only casting spells from this type can lead to catastrophic accidents like the Ahngebrair incident. it's time for the elements. Fire, Ice, Shock, Stone, Water, and Metal. This schools of magic are all the creation and control of each of these elements. Since I saved the best for last we will talk about enchantment magic. the ability to change minds bodies objects and places.
You may have heard from some people that spells are a restrictive way to use magic. This is incorrect, a spell is the most efficient way currently known to perform an action with magic. You could summon a demon lord in an infinite amount of ways yet some are more dangerous and most are very inefficient manawise. To allow newer generations to learn to be efficient with magic most people write down spells they have learned across their life these are ways to shape mana to efficiently get something done. In conclusion. no spells and how spells are used do not limit your capabilities with magic it is simply a way to get across basic actions when teaching people a new form of magic and makes day to day spell casting less dangerous for everyone around you. Later in this textbook we will teach you how to form mana yourself in a safe way but until then it is best you learn through spells first before worrying about how little you can manipulate it. Wouldn't want an infinimancer to make an eggplant instead of an apple would you?
Now for Catalysts, Your catalyst much like your familiar (or familiars if you are a strong enough summoner) is an extension of yourself, the main forms a catalyst can take are staves, wands, orbs, and soul gems. The staff which is most common amongst wizards is made of a high storage potential wood which is enchanted with a part of it's user this allows it to store a lot of mana and more freely allow only it's user to access the mana even if it is at a range. The want on the other hand is more common with witches due to it's ability to store low level spells and allow quick bursts of mana to instantly form with less need for it's user to shape it themselves it is usually made of a piece of wood drifted in a mana rich late for decades then formed into a wand shape with a piece of the users finder nail trimmings sealed within allowing it to be summoned at any time to the users hand a proficient wand user has multiple wands that they summon depending on their needs I happen to have a couple even though my main catalyst is my staff. An orb which happens to be a less common catalyst due to it's security being rather lacking due to not being bound to it's user is able to hold a lot of mana within it due to being made of pure gemstones or even parts of the great spirits you do have to flow the mana within it yourself and anyone is able to add mana to it and use it to their will even if they are not owned by the user. Lastly the soul gem by far the least common catalyst due to the high risk involved is essentially an orb where it is made of a pure gemstone however it must be the same type as your container and you must perform a ritual to bind your soul within the gem. if you were to screw up the process even slightly you might be slain instantly.
For the final part of the lesson we will discuss the difference between witches and wizards then you will be sent off to decide your pat yourself. Witches are spellcasters that can cast any spell at will but can only put a baseline amount of power behind it however this requires a lot more airy clothing than for the wizards. skirts, light robes, large hats, and short or baggy shirts are the preference or wardrobe. Wizards can cast spells with any amount of mana above the baseline but take a lot longer to cast this can also lead to losing concentration in the middle of the spell and losing it. The preference is tighter clothing and covering as much as possible as anything showing is a way for mana to escape. Both men and women can be a witch or a wizard it is just up to how you want to cast your spells. To finalize the entrance ceremony we will discuss the higerarchy of the college. this will determine access to the grounds starting with the one with the most access, Me~ I have access to the whole grounds. The great council has access to everywhere except mine and other council members bedchambers. The H council these people are the ones to talk to if you wish any changes to be made to the college, if you talk to them I may see a form on my desk, they have access to all main floors of the college. Field Teachers they have access to the labratories down. Teachers have access to the faculty room down. all students have access to their year classrooms down. Full mages and practitioners have access to the ingredient stores down, apprentices have access to the library down, familiars have no access unless granted by their owners.
